Have you ever stepped into a swarm of bees?
In April of 2017 I visited with Swarmbustin Honey to discuss their brand. The company has been established since 1983—which happens to be my birth year! When you’ve been doing business that long it’s important to realize that their current logo and branding is recognizable to their customers. That being said, their biggest concern was that people wouldn’t recognize their label if we recreated their logo. I assured Walt, the owner, that we would take inspiration from their original logo and refresh the brand accordingly. Our mission was to allow existing customers to recognize the label, while we attract new customers. This meant recreating a chancery-style font by hand and redrawing their original bee illustration to bring the logo to date. At the same time we would maintain brand recognition and display a clear appreciation for the past. When I’m working with customers it is their preferences that I seek to portray. Less of me and more of them! That’s the goal.
While I was visiting I happened to walk through a few swarms just to get the full picture of what it meant to work with bees! Walt walked right through a few swarms to show me the hives. I just followed along, trying my best to let him lead—not only my steps but my level of fear. He was clearly relaxed! It wasn’t until I saw about 20+ bees just hanging out on him that I thought to myself, “holy cow, that means there are bees all over me too!” Eventually he mentioned that I better take a few steps back. We weren’t wearing any special bee gear. Just our regular clothes! The sound of the buzzing combined with the endless possibilities of outcomes made me feel exhilarated! I must be crazy. I’ll walk through swarms for my customers! 🐝
P.S. Have you tried bee pollen?? It’s amazing and the health benefits alone make it worth your while. Our new labels will be on the shelves soon! You can pick up their bee pollen at your local Kimberton Whole Foods.
