Brand Storytelling

Illustrative Branding: How Hand-Drawn Designs Can Deepen Your Brand Story

Illustrative Branding:
How Hand-Drawn Designs Can Deepen Your Brand Story

Where Art Meets Design

I’ve never felt like “just” a designer or “just” an illustrator. A professor once called me a “designistrator” — and it stuck. My work has always lived in that in-between space: equal parts visual storytelling and thoughtful strategy.

When she said that, I felt seen. It was the first time someone had named the blurry middle where I intuitively worked. I’m not one thing. My work is a blend of aesthetics and purpose, beauty and functionality, art and intention. And nuances just like these are exactly why illustrative branding exists—to tell the full story in one concise symbol vs. over-articulating in a tagline or elsewhere.

What Is Illustrative Branding?

Illustrative branding is the practice of weaving custom-illustrated elements into your brand identity—whether it’s a main logo, a set of icons, or an entire library of visuals that bring the brand to life.

It helps brands feel human, approachable, and full of meaning. It’s especially powerful for those who want to communicate emotion, story, or heritage in a way that goes beyond words.

From trend to timeless tool

Illustration used alongside branding has been around since the origin of branding businesses. However, around 2018, I noticed a growing trend: companies—especially tech brands—were using illustration to soften their digital presence. Characters, icons, visual metaphors. What started as a style trend quickly became something more: a way to guide users, express values, and bring warmth to even the most digital-first brands. And yet, for me, illustrative branding never felt trendy. It has always felt like a natural way to tell a brand’s story.

As a child, I was always creating something from nothing—designing spaces, documenting places, and drawing stories I couldn’t put into words. Visuals were my way of making sense of the world. Now, I help others do the same through their brands.

What makes the use of illustration in branding different?

Illustration allows you to say something instantly that would take paragraphs to explain. It brings depth, emotion, and specificity.

Even the curve of a hand-drawn letter or the texture of a line can communicate a brand’s values. When I work with clients, I’m not just designing for what their brand looks like now—I’m designing for where they’re going, who they serve, and what they stand for. Hand-drawn elements help me tell that story.

Two Real-World Examples

Boston College – Center for International Higher Education

This wasn’t a full rebrand. The department needed to honor the visual identity of Boston College while expressing their own story within it. We created a modular illustration system that brought life to their editorial and digital materials, making space for creativity in a traditionally academic space. It was a chance to show how illustrative branding can work within constraints—and still stand out.

Botanical Packaging Illustration

In another project, I developed a set of hand-painted botanical illustrations for a packaging client. These weren’t just decorative accents—they echoed the brand’s ingredients, values, and aesthetic. The result was a product line that felt deeply personal, refined, and rooted in something real.

Why It Matters

If you’ve ever looked at your brand and thought, “Something’s missing,” illustration might be the piece. It can:

  • Add depth to a minimalist brand
  • Create a signature visual language
  • Make your message instantly recognizable

Even if your logo is simple and text-based, a few well-placed illustrated elements can elevate your presence, hint at your values, and create emotional connection.

A Quick Guide for Trying It Out

Not sure where to begin? Here are a few questions and ideas to get started:

1. Where are you not connecting?

Is there a service or offering that feels hard to describe in a few words? Consider creating a small icon or symbolic image to clarify it.

2. Where could your brand feel warmer or more human?

Think about adding hand-drawn textures or motifs that reflect your brand personality.

3. Want to start small?

Try a custom icon, hand-lettered logotype, or illustrated background. These can live alongside photography or digital design elements to create a cohesive story.

4. Need help visualizing it?

Let’s connect. Whether it’s a one-off illustration or a full brand exploration, this is the kind of storytelling I love to do.

Illustrative branding isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about connection. It helps to put a very human touch on something that can feel overly commercialized. It tells your story before someone even reads a word.

And in a world that moves fast, that first impression matters more than ever.

What is Illustrative Branding? Unveiling the Art that Connects

Just a few years back, amid the adventures of graduate school and the early days of motherhood, I embarked on a journey that would significantly shape my professional path. It was during this period of profound personal growth and exploration that I stumbled upon the magic of illustrative branding. As I delved into this realm, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to The Golden Age of Illustration—a time when artists thrived by bringing narratives to life through their art. Fast forward to today, and I find myself in a renaissance of sorts, thanks to the digital era and social media platforms. Brands like Dropbox and Mailchimp are embracing illustrations as a fundamental aspect of their identity.

So, what exactly is illustrative branding, and why does it matter to me—and potentially to you?

The Essence of Illustrative Branding

At its core, illustrative branding is about infusing brand identity with bespoke, handcrafted elements that go beyond typography to include detailed illustrations that tell a story or convey a brand’s essence. It’s a blend of art and identity, creating a unique, memorable brand experience.

  1. Illustrative Logotypes: Unlike traditional typographic logotypes, illustrative logotypes are handcrafted, infusing the brand’s name with unique character and personality. These are the heart of your brand’s visual identity, adaptable across platforms from web headers to print materials.
  2. Monograms & Emblems with a Twist: When infused with illustrative elements, monograms and emblems transcend their conventional boundaries, offering a more nuanced and personal brand symbol. Perfect for luxury packaging, institutional branding, and anywhere you wish to convey heritage and sophistication.
  3. Icons Reimagined: Beyond simple glyphs, illustrative icons are miniature narratives, distilling your brand’s essence into visual stories that enhance digital navigation and social media engagement.
  4. Secondary Illustrations: From enhancing packaging with custom patterns to adorning digital spaces with unique illustrations, secondary illustrations allow brands to express their uniqueness, engage audiences on a deeper level, and stand out in a crowded digital landscape.

Illustrative Branding: A Canvas for Storytelling

The magic of illustrative branding lies in its ability to tell a story, to imbue a brand with personality and depth that resonates on a personal level with its audience. Whether it’s through a meticulously designed logo that captures the essence of your brand’s mission or through patterns and icons that evoke a specific feeling, illustrative branding invites engagement and connection.

Why does this matter? Because in a digital age where humanity often feels diluted, illustrations serve as a bridge, reminding us of the people and stories behind the brands. They add a layer of warmth and authenticity, making your brand not just seen, but felt.

Practical Applications:

  • Packaging: Custom patterns and illustrations on packaging materials create unforgettable unboxing experiences. This includes the box itself, tissue paper, tape, stickers, and more.
  • Digital Spaces: Website backgrounds, app interfaces, and online advertisements enriched with illustrations offer a more engaging and relatable user experience. Used in combination with the brand to communicate a feeling and attract the right people.
  • Stationery and Business Collateral: Letterheads, business cards, and thank you notes featuring brand illustrations enhance brand consistency and presence. Subtle illustrative elements on stationery can elevate the way the brand feels.
  • Editorial Content: Illustrations in blogs, articles, and online publications draw readers in and reinforce the brand’s voice and message. Utilizing custom illustrations in articles or long form content can help to hold the reader longer and add depth to the story.
  • Social Media Content: Unique, brand-specific illustrations can significantly increase engagement and shareability on social media platforms. Creating something that is not only valuable but also interesting to look at, enables brands to go viral online.

This trend of blending drawing with branding isn’t just exciting for its aesthetic appeal; it resonates with me on a deeper level. It marries my love for art with the joy of collaboration, allowing me to work hand in hand with visionaries to bring their dreams to visual reality. It’s where my passion for storytelling through art meets the strategic world of branding, creating something genuinely unique and impactful.

As we witness this resurgence of illustrative elements, I’m reminded of the power of art to connect, communicate, and transform. If you’re as excited about this trend as I am, I’d love to explore how we can bring the essence of your brand to life through illustrative branding.
